Audio & Visual Design

For my studies, I completed the minor in Audio & Visual Design. Here you'll find a large portion of the works I created during the minor.

All animations were made by myself. Some works were done in collaboration with my classmates; if this is the case, it's mentioned below the photo or video. Additionally, a brief description of the projects and how they were made is provided. There are no paid collaborations involved.

Completed: July 2022

Enjoy watching!

Pink-Blue

Final Project

23-06-2022

This installation was created by Larissa Landstra in response to the winning photo of the Zilveren Camera 2021, taken by Tony Dočekal. The photo features Chad, a homeless man whose clothes were stolen, leaving him with only a dress to wear. Did Chad "steal" his own clothes so he could wear the dress with intention, or were they genuinely taken by someone else? Does this make a difference in how you perceive him?

We all live within our own boxes. How do you view the world outside your box, and how does the world outside view you? Do you stick to your own color, or do you go along with the rest?

The work consists of a wooden frame with 25 'boxes'. Behind these boxes, 25 separate videos are projected. The program is coded in such a way that all videos and audio start simultaneously with the push of a button. Below, you'll find how the work was constructed and developed.

Visual Design

'ART'

5-6-2022

Art is everywhere, not just confined to a frame on the wall but also beyond it. Art doesn't need to be labeled as art to be considered as such.

Assignment: Typography, text on photo.

The background is painted.

Text has been added on the foreground using a computer.

The font used is American Typewriter (modified).

Galaxy 2.0

8-5-2022

Galaxy in a jar. A galaxy without humans. A galaxy where the aliens have taken over everything. The planets are too small to inhabit. There is no gravity; all aliens float around the universe. You can see the light of the aliens across the vast expanse.

Assignment: Worldbuilding.

The animation and visuals were created in Procreate.

The visuals are projected onto styrofoam and paper inside a glass jar.

Circle of Life

7-5-2022

A circle runs circles around the plant. It represents the circle of life. From seed to plant and from plant to seed. Thus, the circle revolves around the plant.

Assignment: Abstract projection on object.

The animation was created in Procreate.

The animation is projected onto a flower pot.

Audio Design

9-6-2022

Self-Recorded Sounds

You're indoors, the door opens, and then...

For the full experience, listen with headphones.

The audio is created using self-recorded sounds (see below) and merged and edited in Ableton Live.

Sounds used:

  • Stapler
  • Rings in a glass jar
  • Spray can
  • Finger snap
  • Tapping pens together
  • Clap on the table

Projects

Below are some of the projects I created during the first term of the minor.

Fireflies

23-3-2022

It's dark. Slowly, lights start to appear on the wall. The space gradually becomes peaceful and illuminated.

Stop-motion of fireflies on the wall.

Animation created in Procreate.

Audio: Yvo Ronhaar

Riso Print

20-4-2022

For the midterm exhibition, I collaborated with some fellow students to create posters using the Riso printer. It took some effort, but the result was worth it.

Fight-or-Flight

9-4-2022

Danger! While one runs for their life, the other calmly waits.

Stop-motion projected in a cardboard box.

Animation created in Procreate.

Audio: Yvo Ronhaar

Galaxy

4-4-2022

Planets projected onto styrofoam spheres.

Animation created in Procreate.

Water is Rising

23-2-2022

This is the first project my group and I created together. It's a character fleeing from rising water. It climbs onto the sink, maneuvering past obstacles to reach the boat.

The character and the boat are projected onto the wall via a lightbox.
